Anglers Fight Back: Saving Wingerworth Lido (2025)

A passionate plea for anglers to stand up and be heard has been issued, as a beloved fishing spot faces an uncertain future.

The Fight for Wingerworth Lido

In a controversial move, North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC) has proposed transforming Wingerworth Lido, a popular fishing lake near Chesterfield, into a 'biodiversity hub'. This decision has sparked an outcry from the local angling community, who are now fighting to have their voices heard.

The council's initial plan to deny the renewal of the fishing license left anglers in a state of dismay. However, thanks to the persistence of local anglers, NEDDC has agreed to a wider review and a public consultation, which is currently underway until November 23rd.

Martin Salter, head of policy at the Angling Trust, expressed his shock at the council's decision to deny the Clay Cross Angling Association an extension on their lease. He emphasized the importance of managed angling in maintaining public waters, stating that without it, these areas often become hotspots for poaching, littering, and antisocial behavior.

"This lake is a beloved part of the community," Salter said. "The angling club has done an excellent job of looking after the water and introducing many children to the sport. We can't let the idea that angling and nature reserves are incompatible stand unchallenged."

Salter highlighted that many angling clubs across the country successfully lease bodies of water from nature reserves, improving the aquatic environment in the process. The Angling Trust has actively lobbied NEDDC and supported a petition started by Chesterfield angler James Duffy, which has gathered over 5,000 signatures.

"We are urging all our members in Derbyshire to support the angling club and make their voices heard. We want fishing to return to Wingerworth, and we need the council to hear that message loud and clear,"

NEDDC has referred the matter to its environment scrutiny committee for review, and a council spokesperson emphasized the importance of public feedback in shaping the future of Wingerworth Lido.

"Your views matter. They will inform our decisions on managing the site, supporting activities, and balancing recreation, heritage, and biodiversity,"

So, anglers of Derbyshire, will you let this beloved fishing spot slip away without a fight? Or will you make your voices heard and stand up for your right to fish at Wingerworth Lido? The future of this community hub is in your hands. What do you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
