KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A recent incident at Kansas City International Airport (KCI) prompted a temporary lockdown, which has since been lifted after authorities concluded there was no legitimate threat to safety.
The lockdown was initiated on Wednesday morning, as reported by airport police to FOX4 news. Around 11 a.m., some individuals within the airport were evacuated while officials investigated a reported "potential threat."
Jackson Overstreet, who serves as the public information officer for the city's aviation department, clarified that the lockdown stemmed from the discovery of a suspicious package believed to be a bomb in a restroom near the baggage claim area.
By 12:30 p.m., city officials announced that KCI had resumed normal operations and was fully open to travelers. A spokesperson for the city released a statement detailing the incident:
"The Kansas City Aviation Department became aware of a potential threat in the unsecured section of the Kansas City International Airport terminal on Wednesday morning. In response, Airport Police and the FBI promptly evaluated the situation to ensure everyone's safety, including evacuating passengers from the affected areas. Law enforcement ultimately determined that there was no credible threat to the airport or those inside the terminal at that time. Following this assessment, KCAD staff worked swiftly to restore normal operations and minimize any disruptions."
Just prior to noon, travelers were allowed to proceed back through security checkpoints.
