Congo Crisis: Over 400 Civilians Killed in Eastern Fighting (2026)

A devastating conflict is unfolding in eastern Congo, with dire consequences for civilians. Over 400 innocent lives have been lost, and the situation is only getting more complex and controversial.

The Rwanda-backed M23 armed group has escalated its offensive in South Kivu province, despite a recent peace agreement mediated by the US. This agreement, signed by the Congolese and Rwandan presidents, excluded the rebel group, which is separately negotiating with Congo. However, the accord obligates Rwanda to halt support for armed groups and work towards ending hostilities.

The regional government spokesperson reported a grim toll: "More than 413 civilians have been killed by bullets, grenades, and bombs, including many women, children, and young people." This violence has occurred between the cities of Uvira and Bukavu, with Rwandan special forces reportedly present in Uvira.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for an "immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities." He is deeply concerned about the escalating violence and its humanitarian impact.

M23 claimed control of Uvira, a strategic port city, on Wednesday afternoon, following a rapid offensive. This development has raised tensions and concerns about the spread of conflict. Congo, the US, and UN experts accuse Rwanda of backing M23, which has grown significantly in size, now boasting around 6,500 fighters according to the UN.

Burundi's Foreign Minister, Edouard Bizimana, urged the US to pressure Rwandan President Paul Kagame to implement the peace agreement. He emphasized the threat posed to Burundi's economic capital, Bujumbura, with over 30,000 refugees and asylum-seekers crossing the border in recent days.

The African Union's chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep regret over the clashes and violence against civilians, which contradict the spirit of the Doha Framework Agreement and the Washington D.C. Agreement. He called for restraint and a political solution.

The conflict is fueled by the struggle for control over mineral-rich territories near the border with Rwanda. More than 100 armed groups are vying for power in this region, with M23 being the most prominent. This conflict has displaced over 7 million people, creating a massive humanitarian crisis, according to the UN. Local UN partners report that over 200,000 people have been displaced across South Kivu province since December 2nd, with civilians also crossing into Burundi.

The US Embassy in Kinshasa has urged M23 and Rwandan troops to cease offensive operations and for the Rwandan Defense Forces to withdraw. However, the Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs blamed the Congolese armed forces for recent ceasefire violations.

This complex and tragic situation leaves many questions unanswered. How can a lasting peace be achieved in this volatile region? What role will international mediation play? And most importantly, how can the cycle of violence be broken to protect the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire? These are questions that demand our attention and thoughtful consideration.
