A bold initiative is underway to tackle the alarming rise in traffic fatalities on our roads. With a death toll of 129 this year, the highest since 2007, the state is taking action to protect its citizens.
The Department of Transportation is leading the charge with a two-pronged approach: incentivizing safer driving habits and increasing law enforcement presence.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The state's law enforcement director, Mike Lambert, believes it's time for his department to step up and support county efforts. "It's not cool to pass the buck," he asserts. Sheriffs are being equipped and trained to conduct speed enforcement and identify impaired drivers, working alongside county police to set up roadblocks.
"We're here to supplement and support, not get in the way," Lambert explains.
And this is the part most people miss...
The DOT is also introducing the Hawaii Safe Roads Challenge, an app that monitors driving behavior. Users earn points for good driving, with the chance to win weekly prizes like gift cards.
"It's a scary thought, but it might just work," says Ruemel Fernandez, a resident of Waipahu.
Tony Skinner, a resident of Hauula, has his concerns: "Will it affect our insurance rates?" he asks.
The DOT assures that participation is voluntary and free, and that user data is not shared with insurance companies or sold to third parties.
"Education is key to making our roads safer," Skinner adds.
So, will this innovative approach pay off? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the state is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to reduce traffic deaths.
