Longtime assistant coach Wink Martindale went through two January interviews for the Jets’ defensive coordinator position. A new report suggests he left the second interview believing Glenn had altered the terms of the job. After the first interview, Martindale thought he’d be allowed to run his own defense if hired. But after the second interview, he felt Glenn would be the one calling the shots on defense.
What prompted the shift? The report points to Glenn attending meetings at Jets owner Woody Johnson’s home in Florida. There’s speculation that Johnson, who has a reputation for getting involved in personnel, may have told Glenn to switch to a plan where the head coach( Glenn) would direct the defense instead of Martindale or another coordinator candidate.
In the end, Glenn tapped Brian Duker for the defensive coordinator role — just a day after Martindale’s second interview and after Glenn had already spoken with eight other candidates. The rapid choice of Duker, after he appeared late in the process, raises questions about why he emerged as the final option so quickly and whether something about the job’s scope had fundamentally changed along the way.
Glenn is expected to call the defense this coming year, a plan that will require him to demonstrate meaningful progress to Johnson to keep his job. If the results don’t show improvement, Johnson could be weighing a change in leadership next season itself.
