At only 20 years old, Mackenzie Coupland, the newest West Australian neo-pro, is already making waves in the cycling world. But here's where it gets controversial: is her rapid rise a sign of exceptional talent, or a reflection of the evolving nature of women's cycling?
The WorldTour, a prestigious cycling circuit, typically welcomes new professionals with a gentle learning curve. Riders often ease into the big events, focusing on finding their place rather than immediate results. However, Coupland's debut season has been anything but ordinary.
After transitioning from the Liv AlUla Jayco Continental team to the WorldTour squad, Coupland has seized the spotlight. Her first WorldTour race, the Santos Tour Down Under, saw her consistently near the front, animating the race and supporting her teammates. But it was her performance at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race that truly impressed.
Coupland was a key player in the closing stages, sprinting to a close fourth place finish in her first WorldTour one-day race. She described the result as "bittersweet," acknowledging that she might have waited a bit longer to sprint, but expressing happiness at her performance.
"I'm pretty happy because it's the first time I've been able to get to the front of a UCI-level race. It's only my second WorldTour race, so I'm pleased with my finish. But there's still so much to learn. Hopefully, one day, I'll get it right!"
A Late Bloomer?
Despite her impressive start, Coupland's journey to the WorldTour is relatively short. She only began cycling seriously in late 2019, when she was identified by the Western Australian Institute of Sport for their talent program. Initially, she was selected for track cycling and kayaking, but her parents' triathlon background and their bikes led her to track cycling.
However, Coupland soon found track cycling "a little boring," and it was when she started riding a road bike borrowed from her mum that she truly discovered her passion.
"When I started riding to and from the track, that's when I really got into it. I loved the freedom and the challenge of road cycling," she explained.
The Future is Bright
While Coupland still has much to learn, her ability to compete in the sprint of a WorldTour one-day race so early in her career is a testament to her potential. It's a reminder that talent can emerge from unexpected places and that the cycling world is full of exciting stories waiting to be told.
