A Potential Health Crisis in Ethiopia: The Marburg Virus Outbreak
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has confirmed a Marburg virus outbreak in Jinka, southern Ethiopia, according to a statement released on November 17. This announcement comes as a critical health concern for the region, as the virus is highly infectious and has a high fatality rate. The outbreak was first suspected on November 12, when a potential viral hemorrhagic fever was reported.
The African Union's specialized health agency, in collaboration with Ethiopia's Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), has initiated a swift response. They have implemented enhanced surveillance, field investigations, infection prevention and control measures, and community engagement initiatives. These actions are crucial in containing the spread and providing support to those affected.
The Marburg virus, a member of the same family as the Ebola virus, causes severe symptoms such as high fever and intense headaches, which typically appear within a week of exposure.
