The NBA's analytics discourse may have suffered a slow and painful death this summer, but that doesn't mean we can't still find players who defy the numbers and deserve our attention. Here's a list of five players who are worth believing in despite underwhelming advanced stats:
Paolo Banchero, Orlando Magic: Despite a disappointing season, Banchero's potential remains. At 23, he's played on injury-depleted teams and under a coach who didn't suit his style. His true shooting percentage has never tipped above league average, but his ability to lead the Magic on a deep playoff run is still within reach.
Alperen Sengun, Houston Rockets: Sengun's talent is undeniable, even if his shooting is inefficient. His combination of vision and power forces opposing coaches into anxious deliberations. I'm willing to overlook his warts and imagine what he could be on a better-balanced roster.
Brandon Ingram, Los Angeles Clippers: Ingram's recent struggles are concerning, but his midrange craftsmanship and vision are satisfying. He's a modestly efficient scorer who can tack reliable exclamation points onto plays. Even if it's not with the Clippers, I believe he'll have a moment in the sun.
Nic Claxton, Chicago Bulls: Claxton's development is hindered by his Nets' rebuild, but his athletic shot-blocking and ball-handling skills are valuable. On a more talented Bulls team, he'll shine with Josh Giddey, Norm Powell, and Tre Jones.
Jarace Walker, Indiana Pacers: Walker's advanced analytics may label him as one of the worst players, but I see potential in his ability to shoot, drive, and make quick reads. The Pacers' trash-on-purpose strategy could be a launching pad for his improvement.
