In a recent development, Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja, Nigeria, after a significant diplomatic mission in Brazil. The purpose of this trip was to attend the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), an event that has sparked intense discussions and highlighted Nigeria's role in addressing climate challenges.

On the sidelines of COP30, Shettima held bilateral meetings focused on Nigeria's participation in carbon markets. These meetings aimed to unlock significant carbon finance, estimated to be between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually over the next decade, to support the nation's climate goals.
Rukaiya El-Rufai, the Special Adviser to the President on Climate Change, emphasized Nigeria's determination to lead by example. She stated, "Nigeria will use its influence to mobilize finance and advocate for adaptation finance for African nations, collectively tackling climate change challenges."
In a related development, El-Rufai highlighted Nigeria's natural resources as a key factor in mitigating climate change effects. She added, "Our natural capital, including oil, natural gas, and renewables, will be utilized to implement our National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and address sustainable development challenges."

El-Rufai also urged other countries to follow Nigeria's lead by submitting their NDCs to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). She praised Nigeria's proactive approach, stating, "We are leading because we have our Climate Change Act and carbon market framework in place."
