Yankees OFF Cody Bellinger?! Latest Offer & What's Next! (2026)

The New York Yankees are playing a high-stakes game of chicken with free agent Cody Bellinger, and it could define their season. Just days after speculation of a bidding war with the New York Mets, the Yankees seem poised to let Bellinger walk. But why? And what does this mean for both teams? Let's dive in.

Initially, it seemed like a natural showdown was brewing. The Mets, under the ownership of Steve Cohen with his deep pockets, were in need of a corner outfielder after missing out on Kyle Tucker. The stage was set for an inter-borough battle, a dream scenario for baseball enthusiasts.

However, whispers suggest this war won't materialize. The Yankees have reportedly decided to stand firm on their offer to Bellinger: a five-year, $160 million deal with two opt-out clauses. They believe this is their final offer. While the door remains open for further discussions with agent Scott Boras, the message is clear: accept it or move on.

Of course, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is aware of the possibility of being outbid by Cohen. The Mets' interest in Bellinger remains uncertain, especially considering how quickly Cohen pivoted to signing Bo Bichette after losing Tucker.

But the Mets have other options. They could pursue lefty starter Framber Valdez, who could command up to $150 million over five to six years. The Mets, along with the Orioles, Cubs, and Giants, are reportedly interested in Valdez.

Securing Bellinger would solve the Mets' need for a replacement for left fielder Brandon Nimmo. Plus, there's the added bonus of potentially outbidding the Yankees for a second consecutive year, as they did with Juan Soto.

The sticking point? Boras is seeking a seven-year deal for Bellinger, while the Yankees are holding firm at five. As one source put it, the Yankees' attitude is, "If (Boras and Bellinger) can do better than that, the Yankees’ attitude is, ‘Fine, take it, good luck.’"

But here's where it gets controversial...

History tells us that Boras is unlikely to back down easily. He's known to let his clients sit on the sidelines, waiting for a desperate team to emerge. Pete Alonso re-signed with the Mets last year on February 12, and starting pitcher Blake Snell didn't sign with the Giants until March 19.

So, why the Yankees' confidence? They're betting on a lack of market interest for Bellinger at seven years. They like Bellinger, who is well-liked within the organization, versatile in the field, and has family ties to the Yankees. Bellinger had a strong season, hitting 29 home runs and batting .348 with runners in scoring position last year.

And this is the part most people miss...

The Yankees see Bellinger as an MLB star, not a superstar, and are sticking to their valuation. They believe five years is a fair commitment for a player of his talent and age. They're hoping Boras will eventually realize there isn't a team willing to offer the contract he desires.

Even with the expected return of key pitchers and a full season from Cam Schlittler, the Yankees' offense will still need to replace Bellinger's clutch hitting and defensive flexibility.

Bichette was considered as a Plan B, but Cohen outbid them. The current plan is to give Jasson Dominguez a shot in left field, hope Trent Grisham can replicate last year's home run total, and prepare top prospect Spencer Jones.

This may not be enough for another successful season, especially with the rest of the AL East looking less threatening. The Yankees' best option is to bring Bellinger back.
